(Luffa aegyptiaca)

It is a species cultivated for its fruit. The plant grows as a gherkin-like vine. The immature fruit is eaten as a seasonal vegetable similar to a zucchini. Contrary to the immature fruit, the ripe fruit is very fibrous and is used to make exfoliating bath sponges, known as loofahs.
