An annual plant belonging to the onion and garlic family. The plant grows like a scallion; from a single clove, leaves and stems multiply, and when dried, several cloves are harvested. It is a "Puerto Rican heirloom" variety that has been cultivated in the fields of Puerto Rico. It is easy to plant and grow. It needs good drainage to develop properly. It is a good crop for periods with harsh tropical climates. It is very flavorful in all kinds of dishes and was one of the original ingredients used to make the traditional sofrito in Puerto Rican jíbaro homes.
